Report details food insecurity among area children

The number of children in mid-North Indiana who don’t always know where their next meal is coming stands at roughly 30,000, according to a new study.

The statistics in the “Map the Meal Gap: Child Food Insecurity 2012” report are compiled by the nonprofit organization Feeding America.

They indicate the percentage of hungry children in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties ranges from 20-to-23%.

Those areas are served by Food Finders Food Bank, which is providing free lunches on weekdays at 38 sites through its Summer Food Service Program.

Director of Development Kier Crites says roughly ten-thousand meals were served last summer, and that number will likely double this summer.

A list of summer feeding locations is available on the Food Finders website.
