Food Finders Food Bank in Lafayette reports it’s running out of supplies.
Volunteer Coordinator Amy Gaulke says the organization is in desperate need of non-perishable donations. She says any individual or organization can help by holding a food drive.
"We have one group holding a drive Friday (July 20) from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and at La Tapatia from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Also, monetary donations are always helpful."
She says Food Finders can use financial contributions to buy food directly from wholesalers at lower-than-average prices.
Gaulke says the food bank already has given away the 67,000 pounds collected in early May from the letter carriers’ drive, and summer means a greater need for donations, because more families come to them for help.
"Parents have to prepare three meals a day, instead of maybe breakfast and definitely dinner during the school year. So, there is more demand from parents to provide that food for their kids."
Food Finders serves more than 170 pantries and soup kitchens in 16 area counties. Gaulke says they're not the only food bank having problems.
"We are hearing this from several other food banks. And with food costs on the rise as well, I know a lot of people have seen this at the grocery store, it's the same for us."
