WL's Cumberland Ave should reopen by Thanksgiving

The second phase of rebuilding a section of Cumberland Avenue in West Lafayette is nearing completion. The final step is putting a roundabout at the intersection with Yeager Road.

Public Works Director Dave Buck says the area should be open to traffic by Thanksgiving at the latest. He says work has wrapped up on the eastern part of phase two, and now the focus is on the roundabout.

"Now they're working in the part that is from Friendship House over to, and including, the Yeager intersection. They have some of it done and back open to local traffic. As they get the roundabout curbs and pavement in and pavement markings in, that'll finish out the entire project."

The project was delayed to relocate a gas line further from the planned roundabout. Buck says that caused a slowdown of a couple weeks.

"We wanted to be able to open at the end of October. Definitely by Thanksgiving it'll be able to be open to traffic and they'll be finishing things behind the curb and sidewalks and trails and stuff like that."

Buck says there is still landscaping work to be done, but it won’t affect traffic through the area.

Phase three of the project is from Salisbury Street to Soldiers Home Road and is set to begin next year. Buck says the city plans to stick with the stoplight at the intersection of Cumberland and Salisbury as a traffic-calming measure.
