A Crawfordsville facility that once housed inmates will now house White Pacific shrimp.
The Montgomery County jail is being converted into a fresh seafood business.
James Leaming and his family now own the property.
He plans to use it for raising and selling the shrimp.
"It is very suitable for raising fish, because of the walls being cement block stand well to humidity, which there is a lot of humidity in raising fish," said Leaming. "There are a lot of drains, so, I decided that it would make sense."
The facility will include six, 14-foot tanks which are each expected to produce up to 450-pounds a year.
"We as a country purchase between about 80-and-90 percent of our seafood is imported," said Leaming. "There is not a lot of it available in town and live guarantees you it's fresh."
The Crawfordsville Board of Zoning Appeals approved the project in December.
Permits for the project still need approval of the Department of Natural Resources.
But, Leaming expects operations to open this year.
