IN secretary of state to clean up voter rolls

Starting July 1st, Indiana will begin the painstaking process of purging voter rolls.

The effort requires mass mailings to voters to verify their status and address.

The last time the state cleaned up the list was in 2005, when more than 300,000 names were found to be invalid.

County clerks used to have the responsibility of maintaining voter rolls, but many did not have the money or staff to keep up with the task.

The secretary of state’s office is taking over the job, and the General Assembly has appropriated $2.1-million for the effort.

Secretary of State Connie Lawson says the goal is to complete the process before the 2014 elections, but she’s not sure yet whether that is legally or logistically possible.
