Food Finders Food Bank is receiving support for its Mobile Pantry program.

The Monsanto Fund’s Remington Site helped secure $20,000 for the local nonprofit.

Food Finders Director of Development Cheryl Precious says the funds will be used to defray Mobile Pantry operations costs.

"Keeping that truck fueled, keeping the perishable product cool in it, that requires obviously gas, staff time to get all of this set up and get the truck over here, and then also food costs."

Precious says Food Finders relies on donations, but still had to purchase roughly 20% of the food it distributed in 2012. She says costs for the Mobile Pantry program typically reach around $1,500 per distribution, which includes 12 full food distributions per month in the 16 county service area and two smaller ones per week in Lafayette.

Monsanto’s Remington Site Manager John Sturges says the money is going to a worthwhile cause.

"One of the key points of the Monsanto Fund is to support the communities where we live and work. And Food Finders touches all the different surrounding communities of our site by providing for people in need, and it's just a great program."

Food Finders officials say this is the first grant of its size that directly supports the program.
