Democrats considering two strategies to derail HJR-3

The minority leader of the Indiana House says Democrats are considering two different strategies to derail the effort to place a gay marriage ban in the state Constitution.

Scott Pelath says he has prepared an amendment that would remove the so-called "second sentence" of the proposal, which bans civil unions in addition to gay marriage.

He says another option is to leave the provision in and hope that causes lawmakers to vote down HJR-3.

Pelath says he will consult with all House Democrats before making a decision on which way to go.

The House Elections and Apportionment Committee voted 9-3 along party lines last week to send HJR-3 to the full House for consideration.

If House lawmakers approve the measure, it would head toward a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee next month.
