Power Outage Hits West Lafayette Monday Morning

11:02 a.m. Update:

Duke Energy spokesman Lew Middleton says a squirrel entering an electrical substation around 7:30, caused this morning's two-hour power outage.  Power has been revived. The squirrel has not.

10:36 a.m. Update:

According to Duke energy'swebsite, power has been restored to the West Lafayette area. Several WBAA listeners report their electricity has been turned back on. 

9:36 a.m. Update:

According to Tippecanoe School Corporation spokeswoman Sue Scott, three TSC schools–Klondike Middle School, Burnett Creek Elementary and Harrison High School–are operating with electricity again after they lost power around 8:20 this morning. 

Scott says power was restored around 9:15 a.m. and didn't affect classes or school activities. 

9:15 a.m. Update:

Power has been restored to West Lafayette's Cumberland Elementary School and Superintendent Rocky Killion says the rest of the school day will proceed as normal, including dismissal at the scheduled times. 

9:00 a.m. Update:

West Lafayette School Corporation Superintendent Rocky Killion says classes started late at Cumberland Elementary School as a result of the power outage, but teachers there are trying to do as many outdoor activities as possible. Power is still out as of 9 a.m.

Killion says he'll try to decide by late morning whether to authorize an early release. He estimates he'll make a decision by 10:30 or 11 a.m. based on "school climate."

8:45 a.m. Update: 

A Duke Energy spokesman says crews are en route to a power outage in West Lafayette affecting almost 700 customers.

Duke's Lew Middleton says the company is unsure of the cause, though he adds crews specializing in substation repair are part of the group headed to West Lafayette.

According to Duke's online map, the outage affects customers in the Bar Barry Heights and Indian Village neighborhoods, as well as a large area north of Sagamore Parkway.
