A winter storm is expected to dump between 5 and 7 inches of snow in the Greater Lafayette area.

The snow, combined with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour, are expected to diminish visibility and exacerbate travel problems on slick roads.

Amanda Lee, a meteorologist at the Indianapolis National Weather Service office, says rain will change to snow as temperatures begin to drop from the low-to-mid 30s Wednesday morning.

"There is a chance before changing over to snow that we'll have some sleet mixed in," she says.

"We're not really expecting any widespread freezing rain potential."

Lee says the precipitation will start off as a heavy wet snow, but things will change as temperatures drop.  "It will gradually get drier and drier so that's when you can expect it to start blowing around."

Tippecanoe, Carroll, Clinton, Montgomery, Fountain, Warren, Vermillion and Parke counties are covered by a National Weather Service winter storm watch which is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday.

The Indiana State Police caution residents to watch road reports, and pack a charged cell phone, food and water before heading out on the road. Also, drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase the distance between vehicles, and clear snow away from headlights, taillights and windows.
