Going, Going, Gone: Lafayette Fans Bid Farewell To Loeb Stadium

Stan Jastrzebski

Loeb Stadium opened in 1940 and played host to five summer league and professional franchises, as well as hosting the Colt World Series and Jefferson High School home games. The Aviators are slated to be the first tenants in its successor, which will see the playing surface get an about-face and be sunk into the ground before “play ball” is called in summer of 2021.

A pre-game show saw Purdue University mascot Purdue Pete flown to the outfield on a helicopter – a precursor to the announcement made by Aviators General Manger Zach Chartrand -- that the team would play home games at Purdue's Alexander Field next summer.

But, even though the team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, the final contest at Loeb Stadium was a loser for the home team in extra innings, 12-11.

The stadium could begin coming down as soon as later this month, as crews were given permission to start the site’s facelift as soon as Tuesday’s final out was made.
