Ball State University is raising tuition by 2% for students next year, which administrators say is in line with most other public universities in the state.
Ball State Vice President for Business Affairs Randy Howard says the Muncie school will raise tuition for undergraduate and graduate students by 2% next year and another 2% the year after that. In-state full-time undergraduates will pay a little more than $9,000 next year. Out-of-state undergrads will pay a little more than $24,000.
Ball State President Jo Ann Gora says the proposed increase is the lowest since 1972.
“It represents a $90 per semester increase in the first year and a $92 increase per semester increase in the second year.”
Ball State, like most other public universities, announced a tuition increase that is within the 2% level recommended by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. While Purdue University made headlines by freezing tuition for two years at its West Lafayette campus, Howard says that is not an option for Ball State, and it’s not quite truthful.
“The tuition cares about tuition and mandatory fees. Purdue froze tuition and increased mandatory fees. So, if you look at the total, they really have about a 1% – if my memory’s right – increase in what the typical student will pay.”
Ball State has also added three new student fees for next year. Those are a study abroad fee, a per-semester equipment fee for journalism and telecommunications majors, and a per-semester transportation fee for all students living off-campus.
