4th Congressional District candidates debate the issues

Chris Sigurdson

The candidates in the 4th Congressional District tried to distinguish themselves during the only broadcast forum of the campaign.

Republican incumbent Todd Rokita, Democrat Tara Nelson, and Libertarian Benjamin Gehlhausen answered question about keeping college affordable, trade with China and reducing the deficit among other topics.

On the Affordable Care Act, Nelson supports it even though she says it’s not perfect. Rokita says he’s already voted more than 30 times to repeal the federal health care law, partly because it goes too far. Gehlhausen says he would repeal the law because it will increase costs.

On issues dealing with women, such as equal pay, health care funding and reproductive rights, Rokita says the real issue for women isn’t about funding for contraceptives, it’s about the economy. Nelson says women who use services provided by Planned Parenthood clinics are at risk if the agency receives a funding cut.

Libertarian Benjamin Gehlhausen says he’s running to improve the nation’s economy and the job-outlook for young Americans like him.

The forum was sponsored by WBAA, the League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette and Greater Lafayette Commerce.
