The Indiana Election Commission will hold a hearing Friday in which all challenges for state and national seat ballot appearances are on the agenda. A total of ten candidates have been challenged.
One noteworthy hearing will be that of Congressman Todd Young (R-9th) who is running for U.S. Senate. Democrats are claiming Young is short on the signatures needed to appear on the ballot in the primary for a U.S. Senate seat. Young disagrees.
Six candidates running for seats in the General Assembly are being challenged on the grounds of party history. If they are running as a Republican, but have a history that includes voting for Democrats, candidates will need the proper chair certification to be a part of that county’s primary election.
Other challenges focus on the way a candidate’s name appears on the ballot. One candidate is being challenged for being too young to run for office.
Angie Nussmeyer is the co-director of the Indiana Election Commission.
“Ten or so out of the hundreds of filings our offices received doesn’t seem too out of the norm,” Nussmeyer says.
On Friday, the candidates will go before four election commissioners -- two Republicans and two Democrats.
It is up to the Indiana Election Commission whether candidates will be able to amend their submissions for the primaries or otherwise be permitted to appear on the ballot.
