Experiencing poverty in Greater Lafayette

Lafayette area residents can experience what it’s like to live in poverty. A simulation is set for tonight, sponsored by the Northwest Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and United Way of Greater Lafayette.

Those participating in the event must provide for basic necessities and shelter on a limited budget during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.” As part of that, there is interaction with human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officers, and others.

After the simulation, facilitated discussion allows the group to take the experience even further, fostering understanding and giving insight into life in poverty.

There is no cost to attend. The simulation runs from 6 – 9 p.m. with registration begining at 5:30 p.m. It is at the UAW Local #2317 Union Hall, 3107 Olympia Drive, Lafayette.
