The League of Women Voters of Greater Lafayette has announced a new campaign intending to make it easier for Purdue Students to vote. Their campaign called P/UVote is collecting money to help out-of-state students pay for new Purdue IDs. The new campaign will teach students about voter ID requirements as well as reimburse students who must pay a $10 fee to obtain a compliant ID.

League of Women Voters voter services chair Ken Jones says guidance from the Indiana Election Division means students who’ve voted in West Lafayette before might not be able to this November.

“Students are going to be confronted with the reality of what they used for voter identification in the past isn’t going to work anymore” Jones says

In May, the Tippecanoe County Election Board announced Purdue IDs must have printed expiration dates in order to be an acceptable voter ID.

Jones hopes the P/UVote campaign will increase awareness about voting accessibility. He says a fee shouldn’t prevent students from exercising their constitutional right.

“Ten dollars shouldn’t be in your way of going to the polls”

The campaign has an initial goal of $10,000 and has already collected $3,000. Those interested in donating can do so through the League of Women Voters website.
