In a press call Monday morning, congressional Democrats announced a resolution expressing the need for LGBT anti-discrimination protections. The representatives on the call say legislation is needed on the national level to prevent states such as Indiana and Arkansas from passing religious freedom laws that allow discrimination.

Congressman Jared Polis (D-Colorado) read a statement on behalf of the resolution’s lead sponsor  Congressman Andre Carson (D-7th).

“In the wake of the backlash of Indiana’s misguided law, it’s clear that the vast majority of Americans oppose this type of discrimination. It’s long past time for Congress to ensure that all Americans regardless of sexual orientation, and or gender identity, know that they are valued members of our society,” Polis says.

In his statement, Carson says it’s time for Congress to reaffirm its commitment to overcome this civil rights issue and ensure true equality for all Americans. Congress will introduce a comprehensive non-discrimination bill later this spring.
