Draft County Thoroughfare Plan Presented To Montgomery Co. Plan Commission

Montgomery County officials are considering ways to change and develop infrastructure as part of comprehensive countywide planning.

That includes improving roads that connect Crawfordsville to cities such as Lafayette and Indianapolis, as well as creating alternate routes to areas that are currently difficult to reach.

HWC Engineering architect Kyle Lueken says building new roads could mean the county might have to use eminent domain to acquire the necessary land.

But he says that depends on how the county approaches mapping and paving. He told the county Area Plan Commission Wednesday that creating those alternate routes would have significant benefits.

“If all the traffic does not have to go onto one road, and there’s ability to get to multiple ways to where you want to go, that improves safety on your network as a whole,” Lueken says.

HWC planner Mallory Thatch says the thoroughfare plan should be seen as a guide for future development, not instructions for immediate changes.

“This isn’t to change all of the roads immediately. This is based on, when development happens or improvements happen, these are the standards that these roads should adhere to after the fact," Thatch says.

The plan was developed using traffic counts, community input and crash statistics.

The meeting did not include time for public comment. The Plan Commission will have a public hearing to discuss the plan next month.
