720 Northwestern Avenue project moving forward

Progress is being made on a West Lafayette planned development on Northwestern Avenue across from Mackey Arena. A proposal for the 720 Building received final approval from the Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission.

West Lafayette Director of Development Chandler Poole says city officials have had a hand in the project since its beginning stages.

"Since day one, looking at a 15-story project, then a 10-story, and then down to where we are now. But also working with the developer to help them understand the neighborhood, what the city's wishes are, how this will work, and coordinating with the department of engineering for permitting."

The 720 Building includes an underground parking garage and five-stories with commercial space as well as 230 residential units.

Poole says the block of Northwestern between Evergreen and Dodge streets currently houses a Regions Bank branch and other retail and restaurant outlets.

"Regions Bank has moved into a temporary trailer in preparations for the demolition to take place. So we anticipate seeing stuff later this month and into February where they'll actually start the demolition and start digging for the parking garage."

The Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission signed off on the project’s final plans Wednesday.

The project is expected to include the bank and a Fresh City Market grocery store.
